On Sunday, June 25, 2023, at approximately 9:01 p.m., the Rialto Police Department Communications Center received reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision in the 1500 block of North Riverside Avenue. Officers and Rialto Fire Department Paramedics arrived on scene minutes later and located 14-year-old juvenile Jordyn Hicks, suffering from life threatening injuries. Hicks was transported to a local trauma center where he later succumbed to his injuries. Following the collision the involved driver, Akshat Shah, parked his vehicle nearby and walked back to the scene to speak to investigators.
The Rialto Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and conducted an investigation. Preliminary information indicates Hicks left the east sidewalk of Riverside Ave. and entered lanes of traffic outside of the crosswalk. Shah was traveling southbound on Riverside Avenue in his white Jeep Cherokee when he struck the juvenile. Witnesses and physical evidence on scene were used to corroborate Shah’s statement and impairment does not appear to be a factor in this collision. The investigation is ongoing.
