On Thursday, July 20, 2023, at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers responded to the 1400 block of
West Foothill Boulevard for an unknown injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and a
pedestrian. Officers arrived on scene at approximately 11:32 p.m. and discovered the involved
vehicle had fled. Rialto Fire Department personnel arrived minutes later and administered lifesaving measures. The pedestrian was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where
she succumbed to her injuries.
Preliminary investigation indicates the suspect was driving eastbound in the #2 lane of Foothill
Boulevard approaching Cedar Avenue. The pedestrian, who was confined to a wheelchair, was in
lanes of traffic on Foothill Boulevard. The suspect vehicle struck the pedestrian, who was outside
of a marked crosswalk, and fled the scene prior to police arrival. Through a continual
investigation, the Rialto Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team identified a
suspect, 28-year-old Justin Thompson, resident of the City of Rialto, in the fatal hit-and-run traffic
collision. Thompson was located and taken into custody. The vehicle used in the commission of
the crime was later recovered near Thompson’s residence in the City of Rialto. At this time, there
is no reason to suspect Thompson was driving under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.
Thompson was booked into West Valley Detention Center for CVC 20001(b)(1) – Hit and Run
Causing Injury or Death with a bail set for $30,000.
