RIDE TO LIVE

The Rialto Police Department in conjunction with the Hawthorne Police Department, have partnered with the California Office of Traffic Safety (“OTS”) to provide valuable training to motorcycle riders in an effort to reduce motorcycle-related collisions, injuries, and deaths.

PARTICIPATION

The “Ride To Live” class is restricted to 25 participants, to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thoroughly learn the skills taught by the instructors. The class is divided into two components emphasizing different aspects of riding.

DEMONSTRATION AND HANDS-ON INSTRUCTION

The course begins with low speed handling and maneuvering of the motorcycle, counter-steering, obstacle avoidance and curve negotiation. 95% of the class is hands-on instruction with skills taught and demonstrated by police motorcycle officers (“motors”), but then actually performed in a controlled manner by the students.

SKILLS LEARNED

  • Proper manipulation of clutch and throttle in order to work the “friction zone”
  • Proper use of head and eyes when turning a motorcycle
  • Precision maneuvering
  • Countersteering
  • Obstacle avoidance
  • U-Turns
